Hard Bounce – What is a Hard Bounce?

A hard bounce occurs when an ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) does not deliver an email to a recipient because the email address is invalid. This non-delivery is permanent, that is, the email will not be delivered in any case.

Why can a Hard Bounce occur?

This situation may occur for the following reasons:

    • The email address to which the email was attempted is incorrect or does not exist.

    • Because the  domain associated with the email address is incorrect  or does not exist.

  • The recipient’s ISP  has blocked email delivery for some unknown reason.

What consequences does a high number of Hard Bounces have?

In email marketing, the Hard Bounces percentage is a delicate metric, since it is one of the parameters by which an email manager is guided when classifying an issuer as Spam .

How to avoid Hard Bounces?

The best way to avoid Hard Bounces is by taking care of the quality of your lists and ensuring that your subscribers are quality.
Using double opt-in is one of the best methods to ensure that email addresses are correct.
From time to time, especially if you haven’t sent campaigns for a while, confirm your list again to keep your contacts up to date.
Keeping your lists clean and up-to-date will reduce the chance of receiving hard bounces. This will reduce the chances of your emails ending up in the SPAM folder and will optimize your open rate.
